Why We Give: Erin's Story

When Erin first moved to Seattle in August of 2013, she was unsure of what the future held for her family. After a series of crises, Erin and her two young daughters became homeless. Unsure of where to turn for support, Erin and her family struggled to find the resources they needed to survive. With winter fast approaching and limited options available, Erin and her two children moved into a tent in Nicklesville. Overwhelmed, stressed, and concerned for the safety and well-being of her children, Erin was losing hope.

Then she learned about Wellspring.

After being referred to Wellspring, Erin felt a renewed sense of possibility as their lives began to stabilize and transform. Through an internship with Wellspring's front desk and Baby Boutique, she began to gain confidence in herself by working with a divese group of clients, donors, and volunteers, and developing her job skills. At the same time, Erin's children were finally able to attend preschool. When her youngest daughter, Zuzu, first arrived at Wellspring's Early Learning Center (ELC), she was a quiet, self-conscious toddler with a limited vocabulary as a result of the trauma and stress she had endured in her young life.

Over the next few months, Zuzu began to express her thoughts and emotions in a healthy way, and eagerly started to learn new words and phrases. With the specialized attention and support of ELC staff, she soon became an exuberant, outspoken preschooler prepared for kindergarten.

Today, Erin and her children are in safe and stable housing, and her children are thriving. As her children continue to grow and succeed, Erin now enjoys giving back by helping other children and families in crisis by volunteering in our Baby Boutique. Determined to build a brighter future for her family, Erin is now focused on applying to school to become a dental technician.

"Wellspring helped us when we were at our greatest need," Erin emphasizes. "From helping prepare Zuzu for kindergarten to allowing us to pick out warm winter clothes in time for this cold weather to teaching me important job skills, Wellspring has made a huge impact on our lives."
