Backpacks, Basics & Belonging: A Season of Strong Starts
Starting strong takes more than a backpack; it takes a community.
When families feel surrounded by people who care, children step into the classroom with more than pencils and paper. They walk in with confidence, hope, and a sense of belonging.
This August, that spirit of belonging has been alive across the Wellspring community, showing how much is possible when neighbors, partners, and supporters come together.

At Wellspring’s annual Back-to-School Family Resource Fair on August 16, families walked away with backpacks, school supplies, and access to resources that go far beyond the classroom. Thanks to the generosity of donors, sponsors, and community partners, the fair was more than a place to pick up essentials. It was a space where families felt supported, connected, and ready for the year ahead. Parents saw that they weren’t alone in preparing their children for school, and children felt the excitement of beginning the year with the tools and encouragement they need to thrive.
“When families arrive at the Resource Fair, they see more than supplies—they see a community showing up for them,” said Karly Lee, Associate Director of the Family Store & Volunteer Engagement. “That moment of belonging and support helps carry them into the school year with strength and confidence.”
That same sense of belonging is also alive at Coronado Springs, a Bridge Housing property where Wellspring serves as the on-site Resident Support Services provider. Through this partnership, families not only find stable housing but also gain access to programs, events, and connections that enrich community life.

This month, Coronado residents came together to celebrate Feria de las Flores, the iconic Flower Festival inspired by Medellín, Colombia. Neighbors filled the community room with flower arrangements, shared delicious food, and added their own creativity to a youth-led mural of painted blooms. The vibrant display now brightens the walls, a daily reminder that culture and creativity are at the heart of belonging.
As the season continues, Coronado families will gather for a Back-to-School Supplies Giveaway, where 120 backpacks filled with notebooks, binders, and calculators will be placed directly in the hands of students. Soon after, the laughter of children will echo from the courts of Steve Cox Memorial Park during Tennis Together, an introduction to the sport led by two accomplished coaches. Beyond new skills, these moments spark joy, confidence, and connection. They remind us that every child deserves to play, learn, and grow with the full support of their community.
“At Coronado Springs, you can feel what happens when a community comes together,” said Cobie Sparks-Howard, Director of Housing Services. “Whether it’s through a backpack giveaway, a cultural celebration, or kids learning a new sport, these moments show families they belong and that support is right here where they live.”
Across the Wellspring community, these gatherings remind us that belonging is built when we show up together. A backpack or a tennis lesson may seem small, but in the hands of a child, it can spark confidence and possibility. A flower mural may start as paint on a wall, but it grows into a symbol of community pride. And a resource fair may begin with supplies, but it expands into a network of care that helps families move forward with hope.
Together, we are creating more than strong starts. We are creating a stronger community.
