It’s More Than a Ride

|

In November and December hundreds of families made their way to Wellspring to pick up toys and other holiday gifts for their children. And this year—thanks to Lyft—the commute to pick up those gifts was easier than ever for many parents.

The Wellspring community really stepped up this holiday season to provide more than 4,200 new toys and gifts for children and teens facing or experiencing homelessness in our community. More than 100 volunteers packed holiday gift orders which included a greeting card with a caring, handwritten note.

But, for many families, traveling to Wellspring to pick up their gift orders was really challenging in a world where public transportation can be limited, cars can be unreliable, and relying on friends or family can feel burdensome. Trips navigating trains, walks in the rain or snow, and multiple bus connections are generally reserved for priority errands to pick up groceries and other basic essentials.

As with all Wellspring services, staff and volunteers worked to meet families where they are whenever possible. “This was the inspiration behind partnering with a rideshare service to help us reach more families who have long or difficult commutes to Wellspring,” says Family Store Manager Karly Lee. “We are so grateful to Lyft for making ride credits available so more families could settle into a warm, safe ride to pick up their children’s gifts.”

From the entire Wellspring community, we extend a sincere thank you to Lyft and Lyft drivers for providing this crucial service to help more families experience joy this holiday season.
