Little Steps for Equity

|

“Freedom, freedom let it ring. ‘Let it ring,’ said Dr. King. …”

Black Child marching with sign on their back: Black Children MatterOn Tuesday, February 21st, Early Learning Center (ELC) students and teachers led staff and parents in a March for Equity around the outside of Wellspring’s building on Rainier Avenue South. Carrying handmade signs and singing chants, the group marched together in support of equal rights for underserved communities, particularly Black Americans.

On pause during the pandemic, the annual event began in 2016 as a Martin Luther King Day celebration held inside the building. Those who participated in previous marches were eager for its return this year.

According to Chief Program Officer Bevette Irvis, “Our ELC Teachers celebrate the various cultural backgrounds and heritage of children on an on-going basis throughout the year, and during Black History Month there is an intentional age-appropriate focus on teaching about the contributions of African Americans.”
