Jamal had been homeless for most of his elementary school years. By the time he was in 4th grade, he was living with his father in a truck and struggling in school. Behind in math and reading, Jamal also displayed behavioral issues in class as he struggled to cope with his traumatic situation at home.

That all changed when his family connected with Wellspring Family Services and secured subsidized housing that year. With a warm bed and a place to confidently call home, Jamal was able to feel safe and secure, which in turn, allowed him to focus on his academic performance.

With a roof over their heads, Jamal’s father was able to turn his focus from basic survival to his son’s needs, including a stable bedtime routine.  As his father explained, “I was so grateful to finally have a stable place to sit down and help him with his homework before bed.”...

Last Thursday, more than 100 dedicated early learning supporters, advocates, and community influencers enthusiastically entered Wellspring’s Rotary Support Center for Families to celebrate the expansion of our Early Learning Center (ELC). Joined by Mayor Ed Murray, Seattle City Council President Tim Burgess, and Kim Cleworth, President of the Ginger & Barry Ackerley Foundation, Wellspring CEO/President Ruthann Howell was all smiles as we celebrated the strength of our community and the opportunity to provide additional opportunities for children in crisis to triumph over trauma.

It’s hard to believe that it’s already that time of the year again—the time where we look back over the past 124 years with a sense of gratitude and accomplishment, while also looking ahead to the unwritten potential of a new year, and all that we can achieve together for children and families in crisis.

Thanks to the unwavering support of so many in our community, we were able to help thousands of children and families access the support that all individuals need to overcome adversity and achieve positive, permanent change in their lives. It was so inspiring to watch these changes unfold in 2014 for our clients, and to see them return in 2015 with a new level of confidence, optimism, and determination to take the next positive step forward.
